Bella Union

★★☆☆☆
Ezra Furman trades in his pop tunes for something bigger and more confrontational 4 years after Perfume Genius already did it. That's not to say others can't follow that same path, but as an album that wants to be shocking, it completely fails. Transangelic Exodus can be summed up in about three phrases: lo-fi instrumentation, gruff vocals, misspent youth. After the first stretch of 4 or 5 songs featuring roughly the same story and imagery, everything starts to feel hackneyed and calculated. Watch out for the obligatory Doc Martens reference.
More time should have been spent on the structure and flow of these songs. There's a story somewhere underneath the posturing. As it is, Transangelic Exodus feels very repetitious and unfocused. And what happened to all the hooks?
